I love the change of seasons, especially Winter to Spring. So often in our lives we rush around from one appointment or meeting to the next, not really taking time to notice what is around us. God reveals himself to us in and through creation. Take the time to be still (even for a few seconds) to notice your surroundings and take it all in.

Take a good look at God’s wonders - they will take your breath away (Psalm 66:5)

We were so lucky to have some fabulous industry experts come in and chat with some of our staff on the Student Free Day last week. They shared their amazing stories and delved into their observations about how industry is changing, and the skills and dispositions that come in most useful within their work. There was a lot to think about in terms of education and how we might continue to prepare and develop the type of young people our world needs. Thank you so much to Katura, Morgan, and Michelle for sharing their pearls of wisdom. We certainly hope to continue to build on these connections in the future.

We are already planning for staffing, resources, and Year level structures for 2023.  If you know your child will not be attending LORDS in 2023, it would be of assistance if you could please notify our Registrar Leisa Martin in writing as soon as possible and with consideration of the enrolment contractual obligations of providing at least one term’s notice in writing.  This means for those students not returning in 2023, written notice should be received via email or letter by September 16, 2022. You may submit your notice to admissions@lords.qld.edu.au.

Our Year 11 Psychology students hosted a wonderful pancake breakfast for Year 7 to 12 yesterday for RU OK Day.

We can all make a difference in the lives of those who might be struggling by having regular, meaningful conversations about life's ups and downs.

If you feel like something’s not quite the same with someone you know – there’s something going on in their life or you notice a change in what they’re doing or saying - trust that gut instinct and take the time to ask them “Are you OK?”

By acting as  ‘eyes and ears’ and reaching out to anyone who's going through a tough time we can show them they’re supported and encourage them to access help sooner.

After a stressful few weeks of assessment, our Year 12 students relaxed and re-energised together with a lazy afternoon at Paradise Point. They enjoyed hot chips, ice cream, and each other’s company, listening to music, throwing a frisbee, and even a game of beach cricket. As they now begin to prepare for their last round of exams and the end of their schooling, this opportunity to chill out together gives them a well-being boost and one of their last chances to connect as a whole cohort. A big ‘THANK YOU’ to Miss Krenske for organising this very special afternoon for the 2022 Year 12s!

Yesterday, a small group of senior students participated in the practical component of their studies in health support. A Certificate II in Health Support provides students a pathway towards a wide range of careers in the health services industry including allied health and nursing. The Year 10B Hospitality class Food Truck event was held last week. All of our students worked hard all day to produce delicious food and drinks for Year 7-9 students and staff. We couldn't be prouder of the quality of food produced.

The Year 1 students had a fun-filled visit from the Wildlife Rangers on Thursday! We got to see (and touch) a blue-tongued lizard, bearded dragon, woma python, long-necked turtle, crocodile, ring-tailed possum, and a tawny frogmouth. It was a great opportunity to see and interact with Australian animals that we have been learning about and the habitats they live in. We learned how long crocodiles can be, how a blue-tongued lizard camouflages, and that it takes up to 50 years for a tree hollow to form, teaching us the importance of nest boxes.

Each of our Junior School classes has chosen a special Gift of Grace that their class will be working towards until the end of the term.  This is an idea our Student Council Reps have organised for our JS classes.  As our first fundraising event we are having a Crazy Sock Day next Wednesday.  Each student is asked to bring a gold coin in to contribute to this cause. 

This money will then be collected and counted and go towards each individual classes tally.  Thanks so much for your support!

The Prep to Year 6 students will experience a day of Japanese cultural activities kindly organised by Mrs Bessie Kammoora.

Our Year 5 students were asked to design a creature for a Kindy student. The Kindy student decided on colour, shape, accessories, and even the creature's personality. The Year 5 students were then tasked with designing this creature. Last week our Year 5 students visited Kindy to meet their buddies and to hand over their creatures.

Last week our Year 6 students engaged in a very worthwhile workshop with author and illustrator, Yvonne Mes. They explored important skills and techniques which will help them illustrate their very own narrative as part of their Project Based Learning unit of work. In this unit, the students have been building empathy and understanding of refugees through discussion, research, and by listening to personal stories. They will now write their own narrative which will aim to raise awareness of some of the struggles refugees might face.

As part of their Project Based Learning unit of work our Year 3 students are exploring the impact of drought in rural areas of Australia. Last week they were lucky enough to hear from Vickie who works for Lutheran Drought Aid Qld. She told stories about the way drought affects families living in these communities, so that they gain a deeper understanding of their needs.

As part of the learning process, they will design, make and sell an upcycled product at our annual marketplace. The students will then donate the profits to those in need. Check out the creative upcycled bags they made with recycled materials at their reverse garbage workshop. 

We are so lucky to be a Kindy to Year 12 school. It provides fantastic opportunities to develop relationships and connections with a range of people of all ages! That's why it was fantastic to see our Year 9 Hospitality students mentoring our younger Year 4 students while they did some cooking.

Last week under the enthusiastic leadership of Mrs Coles, our Senior Strings Ensemble travelled to Aspley Special School to engage in a community service opportunity. LORDS students put on a short concert for the entire school and then invited Aspley students to have a go.

Our students reflected on the experience for them and the impact they had on Aspley students. As this was our first time visiting other schools, most felt nervous but quickly realised that they were making a real impact on these students. Comments like “We made their day happier” and “the look on their faces made me smile” was common and we look forward to taking this program to other schools to help spread our love of music.

Last week we celebrated Father's Day early! Plenty of bacon, eggs, sausages, rolls, and juice delighted the dads, pops, uncles, and of course our students. Thanks to everyone who joined in. It was wonderful to see so many families enjoying the gathering in the beautiful morning sunshine.

A special thanks to FOLS and Mrs Adine Wilson for supplying the breakfast. Our expert chefs, Mrs Kellie Hardke and Mrs Fiona Smith worked those BBQs with what looked like effortless magic - but we know it took a lot of effort - for that we are truly grateful. Also a big thanks to Miss Paula Humphrey, Mrs Kerryn Vezos, Mrs Kerry Groch, Mrs Rebecca Ludcke, Mrs Leisa Martin, Miss Lauren Krenske, Mr Stuart Halsall, and Mrs Michelle Nisbet for their superb serving and sous chef skills!

Our Father's Day celebrations continued into the Junior School classrooms, with plenty of families enjoying spending time with their children in their school environment.

Our Father's Day Stall was another successful event. Never do we tire of watching the students choose gifts for the special people in their lives - they know exactly what they do or don't like!  Amazing thanks to Roselyn, Cassie K, and the Year 6's who came along to help - we couldn't do it without their help! $2,000 was raised which will go towards more items for our students.

Are you someone who writes life goals into a book?  Do you work with a vision board?  There is the saying that if we aim at nothing, that is what we’ll achieve.  I like writing down goals – I find it helps keep me accountable to myself.

‘Manifesting’ is a term we hear a lot these days.  It seems to draw on the power of the visual imagination as well as the power of words.  This word stuck with me in my wider reading this week and Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians came to mind.

‘For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.’  2 Corinthians 4:11

A Christian, in the first instance, wants to ‘manifest’ the new life in Christ before any personal goals.  According to 1 Timothy 6:11b, this life consists of ‘righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.’  We might add hope and courage to that list.  Manifesting new life in Christ is our first calling and will always be fulfilling.

Maybe Father's Day is a good opportunity to manifest or shine forth such things with our own dads. My father died four years ago but there are still significant older mentors in my life (retired pastors, even a former tennis coach) and I thank God for them.  Take time to identify these people in your own life – they have made a difference I’m sure!
