Next week we acknowledge Reconciliation Week and pray that as a nation, indigenous and non-indigenous people can continue to heal, learn and grow together.

Almighty and loving God, you who created ALL people in your image, lead us to seek your compassion as we listen to the stories of our past.

You gave your only Son, Jesus, who died and rose again so that sins will be forgiven. We place before you the pain and anguish of dispossession of land, language, lore, culture and family kinship that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have experienced. We live in faith that all people will rise from the depths of despair and hopelessness.

Heal the hearts of the broken, homeless, and afflicted and fill their spirits. In your mercy and compassion walk with us as we continue our journey of healing to create a future that is just and equitable.

We have so much to appreciate and be thankful for at LORDS. The last two weeks have been a wonderful celebration of community. Thanks to everyone for supporting the Festival of Fun last weekend. Friends of LORDS (FOLS), together with the staff and students did an amazing job and we a grateful for the time, effort, organization, and enthusiasm that everyone brought to the day.

Thanks to our FOLS President , Adine Wilson, Vice-President Suzzanne Setina, and Treasurer Jenny Leeds along with Stuart Halsall and Julie Blair-McDevitt for their work in supporting and organising this special community event. 

Thanks also goes to the students of the Junior School for their wonderful musical ‘Bored’ held Wednesday and Thursday night this week. It was a delight to see students sharing their gifts and talents with the community through the arts. Special thanks go to Mrs Kerryn Vezos and her team (Melissa Hogbin, Vikki Nel, Carrie Nair, Christina Price, Dianne O’Brien, Rebecca Ludcke, Nicole Terry, Charlotte Apostolides, Baileigh Blatch, Ellie McGuire) for their wonderful work in creating, directing, and supporting our young people through this terrific experience.

Congratulations to the LORDS Open B Debating team who won their Round 4 debate last night! Jasmine, Cassidy, Jessi, Megha, and Will (not pictured) have shown great commitment, regularly meeting during lunchtimes to practice and hone their skills. The growth and development the students have shown over the competition is remarkable. We are so proud of their hard work and dedication!

Last week we held our Subject Selection Evening for our Year 11 students for 2024! It was a terrific opportunity for families to engage with universities, TAFE, and Heads of Department to find out about the range of offerings here at LORDS and the multiple pathways for students looking at ATAR and VET options. At LORDS we just don’t focus on what students want to ‘do’ when they finish school, we ask bigger and broader questions such as ‘What would you like to create? What problems would you like to solve? How would you like to serve your community?’

On Thursday 11th May, students in Years 10-12 keen to explore the possibility of pursuing a trade qualification, participated in a site tour of Telwater Marine. Telwater is one of the many large watercraft companies located in Coomera's Marine Precinct. Telwater employs over 400 staff across diverse roles. Students met the human resources manager, site manager, machine operators, tradesmen and tradeswomen, and highly skilled people responsible for watercraft upholstery.

LORDS Pathways discovery program is committed to providing multiple opportunities for students to engage with industry and help them make positive, personalised future work and study decisions.

Adolescence is a crucial period for developing social and emotional habits important for mental well-being. In Surviving the Adult Jungle students have been building a toolkit of practical strategies that they can rely on in times of heightened stress. Last week they had the opportunity to visit the new Pimpama Sports Hub where they engaged in an Aqua Aerobics and Stretch class. They also had Mr Ram take them through an exercise circuit using the LORDS gym! What have you done today to look after your own well-being?

While my role primarily focuses on LORDS student pathways, I wanted to advertise the following FREE TAFE courses to the wider community.

Vocational qualifications are often expensive and leave people questioning their desire to upskill or complete a qualification they have pondered for some time.  

Check out these FREE courses for adults and teenagers 16 years of age+ and no longer at school.  The list is extensive; what better time to start studying? 

Firstly, The Minister has just announced the removal of eligibility restrictions that applied to the Diploma of Nursing funding this year.

That means any student with a course commencement from 1 January 2023 in HLT54121 - Diploma of Nursing from who meets the below can get the Diploma for FREE. New Enrolments mid-year will also be able to access fee-free funding.

The first State of Origin game is on Wednesday 31st May. Students will be permitted to wear a QLD or NSW jersey, jumper, Tshirt, scarf, or colour with their PE uniform. We are asking for a gold coin donation to go to The Kokoda Foundation.

As a part of our Project Based Learning Homelessness unit, the Year 3 students are helping St Vinnie’s with their annual Winter Appeal. We would love for you to help support us by bringing in hygiene items so that we can create hygiene packs for St Vinnie’s to give to the homeless people who they support.

Items we would appreciate are:

• travel size shampoo and conditioner
• toothbrushes (adult and kids)
• toothpaste (adult and kids)
• dental floss
• small hand sanitiser
• small hand cream
• shaving cream
• deodorant (men and women’s)
• small packets of tissues
• soap

We would love the donations by Wednesday 14th June.

Well done to our 18km and 30km Kokoda teams who hit the trails at Nerang Forest yesterday. Students hiked 12km in their final school training session before the big event on 3rd June. Great work all!

On Monday 15th May, LORDS participated in the Gold Coast School Futsal Titles at the Coomera Indoor Centre. We took 3 Under-12’s teams to play against schools from all over the Gold Coast. It was a very successful day with the LORDS Under-12 High School boys team, making it to the Semi-Finals before losing 5 to 3, but still having an outstanding day with some great sportsmanship and skills shown throughout the day. The LORDS Under-12 Primary School boys team lost in the quarter-finals but should be very proud of their efforts as this was the first Futsal carnival for some of the boys. The Under-12’s Girl's team was undefeated for the first 4 games of the day before losing their last 2 games, each by 1 goal to end up 3rd place overall. The girls played outstandingly well considering the team was made up of mainly 10 and 11-year-old girls. In a great show of how successful the day was for the LORDS Futsal teams, the 12 High School boys team and 12 Girls team have now qualified for the Champions of Champions round against teams from all over Queensland later in the year.

Day 2 of the Gold Coast School Futsal Titles. Tuesday 16th May was our Under 9s, 10s, and 11s turn to compete. A massive shout out to our Under 9s who for many of them was their first-ever tournament. A successful day for them making the semi-finals and finishing fourth overall. Our Under 11s and 10s Yellow team are to be commended for their efforts, improving so much throughout the course of the day. Last but not least, a massive congratulations to our Under 10s Blue team who were runner’s up, unfortunately going down 5-3 in the Grand Final against Somerset College. This is a massive feat as there were 15 teams in the Under 10s age group alone. To finish 2nd is a valiant effort against some very tough competition. We wish them all the best as they progress to the Champions of Champions tournament later in the year. It has been a massive two weeks of Futsal for both our primary and secondary students. You have all done the school extremely proud.

Ms Hoff had a challenging task last week to select the winners of our Art Competition, Flourish Through Fun. We had so many wonderful entries from so many talented and creative students.
