Thanks to all the families who have supported our Mother’s Day celebrations this week. From our open classroom and morning tea this morning (thanks to FOLS for their support of this), to our Mother’s Day stall and FOLS flower drive. It has been a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the women in our lives who make such a difference to who we are. Thanks to Ormeau Florist and Black Sheep Brew & Chew for their support of this event.

On Thursday 9th May all Year 10 students were involved in the Human Library Event here at LORDS. We had 12 living ‘books’, guests from the church, community, and school who donated their time for students to hire out. Through the event, students were able to listen to and ask questions about the guest’s life stories, achievements, and learnings. This was a fantastic event that was thoroughly enjoyed by both our guests and students alike. A big thank you to Rebecca Ludcke, Michelle Nisbet, Kirsten Mackinnon, Brent Whitney, Riette Nel, and Jeremy Lie for their support.

It's wonderful to see some of our Year 8/9 students getting hands-on in the Tech shed this week. After exploring and designing a disaster-proof house last term, they are now beginning to build it from scratch! Last week they were constructing the frame and this week they will pour the slab. It's great to see the groups communicating effectively, sharing ideas, and collaborating to achieve a common goal!

Our Year 11 and 12 Business Studies students had an amazing time at our workshop at Ikea! They explored marketing strategies, sustainability, the Ikea story, and customer experience in action at one of the world's leading furniture retailers. As part of our Year 6 into Year 7 transition program, each term our Year 6 students engage in a Year 7 experience subject. This term they are enjoying Digital Technology, Food Technology, or Drama. These experience subjects are a wonderful opportunity for our students to familiarise themselves with Secondary School staff, and spaces and learn new content and skills.

On Friday 3rd May, our Year 10 students attended the Gold Coast Careers Festival. This event is an exciting networking opportunity for our young people and an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of potential pathway options before they make decisions about their senior subjects. Students had the opportunity to speak with representatives from local universities, TAFE, training colleges, the Australian Defense Force, and government agencies as well as individuals from the music, health, trades, beauty, marine, and digital animation industry. This event was a truly valuable experience for our students.

Attending the Careers Festival is part of our fortnightly Pathway program that Year 10 students engage with. In these sessions, we have been busily exploring various potential Senior Secondary Pathways and considering how these align with our students’ personal goals and career aspirations. As part of this process, students were recently introduced to our new, exciting LORDS Senior Secondary Pathways options, the ‘3 Cs’. Our Challenger, Cultivator, and Crusader Pathways are customised to suit the individual needs and goals of students and ensure that they are set up for success in their senior years of schooling. Attending the Gold Coast Career Festival today, took them one step closer to knowing which Pathway is the best fit for them!

Students in the Year 8/9 Pathway subject ‘Tiny Houses’ have been planning a tiny home using key design principles.
They have been learning how to use the 3D modelling program, Fusion 360, to sketch their designs using a digital platform.
Last week they had the opportunity to hear from Chris Haywood a Civil Engineer who works at Gold Coast City Council. He shared his insights about what a day in the life of an engineer looks like and shared some of the designs and programs that he is currently working on. Chris also shared his career journey and explained the many different pathways and career options for students who are interested in the engineering field.

This week some of our Year 8/9 students went on an excursion to 'Big Tiny Homes' in Oxenford.

The students had the opportunity to explore three different tiny home designs and Matt one of the co-owners shared his insights and experience in this space. They will now go back to the drawing board and iterate and improve their own tiny home designs. It is great to see our students connecting and learning from people in our wider community.

Recently our Year 8/9 CSI students stepped into the shoes of forensics experts and learned how to test different types of fibres. They identified fibres using microscopes by exploring their formation and testing their reaction when acetone was added. Students also burnt different fibres using a flame to see how they would react. These skills will help students design and plan a ‘Whodunnit’ activity based around a crime scene later in the term. It is great to see our young people developing curiosity by actively exploring ideas in such a hands-on way!

In preparation for their upcoming assessment, Year 11 Hospitality students were fortunate to be able to visit the Emporium Hotel. First, we heard from Anita Russell, Director of People & Culture for Emporium Hotels, then were treated to a hotel tour through facilities, a guest room, and back of house. This experience gives students a greater understanding of the industry, how hotels work and the wide range of employment opportunities within hotels and the broader hospitality industry. Finally, students were able to enjoy high tea – a first for most! This experience gives students the perspective needed for our upcoming assessment event, where students serve high tea to staff. What an experience!

Launch Your Career

We are reaching out regarding our next 'Launch Your Career' event on Thursday 23rd May. This
year, we are running the event a little differently after the success of last year’s event and taking
on board student and parent feedback. The event will take place within the school (and work)
day. We are hoping to find some more industry representatives to talk with students about
their own careers/job roles. This might be you.
In summary, the details are as follows:

How does this event work?
A small group of students will arrive at your table and stay with you for around 7 minutes.
During this time, guests chat in general terms about their current work role, the
company/organisation they work for, and tell students a little about their personal career
journey. At the 7-minute mark, a bell will sound, and a new small group of students will arrive
at your table for a chat.

Why is this such a valuable event to be part of?
From experience, we learned that natural conversations with people working in roles students’
express interest in had an incredibly profound impact on them at a time when they are
considering their own future, and how they might map out their 'best life'- personally and
professionally.
As educators, we cannot provide students with such rich and rewarding knowledge without
the support of community members offering students 'real world' insight into their pathway and
career options.

Oh what a night! Our Junior School Disco was a hit! Thanks to all the staff and Karizmatik Entertainment, Black Sheep Brew & Chew, and Miss P Icecream for ensuring we had such a great time together.

As a part of our Project Based Learning Homelessness unit, the Year 3 students are helping Vinnies QLD with their annual Winter Appeal. We would love for you to help support us by bringing in hygiene items so that we can create hygiene packs for St Vinnie's to give to the homeless people whom they support.
Items we would appreciate are:

Great job 2B who visited Prep - Year 2 classes to promote their Project Based Learning activity on Wednesday! 2B is collecting recycled materials for Mrs. Bartley to use as STEM resources. Futsal at LORDS is thriving. Each Tuesday afternoon there have been record numbers of students attending our afterschool Futsal program. Each Tuesday from 3:15-4:15pm, students in the Junior School have been learning new skills, building a team environment, and enjoying game situations in the program delivered by both skilled teachers and qualified coaches.

Over the next couple of weeks, Futsal will be in full force. The first major tournament of the year began this week and continues next week. Students at LORDS will be competing at the Gold Coast Futsal Titles at the Coomera Indoor Centre. We have a record number of teams entered across all age groups from Under 8’s right up to Under 15’s. In the past LORDS has been very competitive and successful at this tournament and we are sure this will continue over the next fortnight.

There will be another Futsal competition in the Junior School in the final week of term with details about this tournament to go out shortly.

More LORDS history was made last week! Our Year 8 boys Futsal team has progressed to the next round of the Metro Finals after defeating Stretton State College 3-1. The boys displayed incredible leadership, teamwork, and determination to come away with the win! We wish them well for their next round against Mable Park State High School.

Lutheran Cross Country Carnival
We are thrilled to share the outstanding achievements of our talented athletes from the Lutheran Cross Country Carnival! It was a day filled with determination, sportsmanship, and incredible performances, and we couldn't be prouder of our team's accomplishments.

Record-Breaking Results: This year marked one of our best performances in recent years, with an impressive total of 6 top 10 finishes across various categories. Our athletes truly gave it their all, showcasing their skill and dedication on the track.

Division 2 Champions: A special shoutout to our phenomenal 9-year-old girls' team, who clinched the Division 2 pennant with their exceptional performance! Their hard work and perseverance paid off, earning them a well-deserved victory. Additionally, our 11/12-year-old girls' team also emerged victorious in their division, securing another Division 2 pennant for our school.

Overall Success: As a school, we soared to new heights, finishing as the 2nd school with our percentage and 3rd overall in Division 2. This incredible achievement reflects the incredible talent and teamwork displayed by our athletes throughout the carnival.

Pacific District Cross Country
Congratulations to all our students who represented LORDS this week at the Pacific District Cross Country event. We had a record 11 students selected for the upcoming Regionals or successfully received a reserve position. A special mention must go to Harper B. who received 2nd place, and Lily W. who received a 3rd place medal.

Another successful Saturday of netball. Congratulations to LORDS Albert on a great game. This game had some excellent defense and goal-scoring. It was awesome to see the amazing team performance by LORDS Wattles and the great sportsmanship shown by LORDS Pimpama. We ended the day with a super performance by LORDS Lillies. A super big thank you to all of our parent managers. We couldn't do this without you!

Huge congratulations to our LORDS students at the recent Gold Coast Running Festival! We had students in the 1km, 2.5km, and 5km events and each student represented LORDS extremely well. Personal goals were set and beaten on the day and we had some fantastic results from our runners. Keep shining, keep running, and continue inspiring greatness!

Tomorrow is the day! Team LORDS will join Walk My Way Ukraine. We’re also fundraising to provide practical care for the millions of Ukrainian children and families who have fled the conflict into neighbouring countries, and for those who are displaced within Ukraine. The funds raised will be used to provide emergency food, water, and shelter, to help rebuild housing so displaced families can return home, to rebuild schools so children can continue to learn, and to provide psychological care for children who have suffered trauma.
