It’s hard to believe that we are approaching Easter already. Every year, Christians celebrate Easter to remember Jesus’ sacrificial love for us. Jesus died on the cross and rose back to life so that all people can experience his goodness, love, hope, and peace.
When Jesus lived on Earth, he walked among people experiencing poverty, and those people on the fringe of society. Jesus experienced what it was like to be human - rejection, betrayal, suffering, and pain.
Our challenges, difficulties, and circumstances may look different today, but Jesus understands them. And, amid whatever trials you may be facing, Jesus offers his peace.

Empathy, is essential to human connection, and serves as a way of guiding our students towards a future filled with understanding, kindness, and meaningful relationships.

Empathy bridges the gap between individuals, developing genuine connections in understanding and compassion. Through empathy dives—opportunities for students to immerse themselves in diverse perspectives and experiences—we cultivate a deep sense of empathy that transcends differences and fosters a culture of inclusivity and acceptance.

Fostering Global Citizenship

In an interconnected world, empathy is the cornerstone of global citizenship. Through empathy dives that explore different cultures, societies, and worldviews, our students gain a deep appreciation for diversity and develop the empathy needed to become compassionate global citizens who strive for justice, equality, and understanding on a global scale.

Through our service-learning experiences and units of work, such as Year 11 students’ partnering with aged care residents at Tri-Care in Pimpama and our Year 5 unit about being ‘uniquely abled’, our students develop empathy by connecting and developing skills in active listening, boundary crossing and being present with others.

Leave Requests

Families are reminded that requests for leave need to be in writing to both your class teacher and Mrs Hardke (P-6) and Mrs Kinne (Year 7-12). We strongly encourage you to talk through your request for leave with the school before you go ahead and book or plan any activities.

There are certain times of the term that are not ideal regarding the learning and teaching process. We understand that certain family circumstances may require leave (eg compassionate leave) and are understanding of these requests and will support families in these situations

Rehearsals and preparations are well underway for our 2024 musical ‘Alice in Wonderland.’. It is amazing to see so many of our talented music, dance, visual arts, and drama students bringing this great family-friendly story to life. Our Year 8 and 9 students involved with the Fit for Life Pathways Passion Project elective have been experiencing gym life! Over the past couple of weeks, we have visited World Gym and F45 Training in Ormeau to show the students what a fitness business could potentially look like. They were also lucky enough to be trained by professional personal trainers. This has helped the students formulate their own ideas for the upcoming assessment in which they are creating their own fitness empire.

The Year 12 Industrial Technology students have been working hard to create an ottoman for their final assignment. They have done an outstanding job and should be proud of themselves.

The blue one was made by Heath S, and the black one by Tiernan M. Well done!

Last week, the Year 10-12 Drama students, were treated to a Grin & Tonic Theatre Co. performance of the play Wisdom. Grin & Tonic created an engaging and entertaining atmosphere and performed authentic and fresh scenes. They did this by inviting students to participate in their own unique way. This provided an excellent opportunity for students to display their improvisation skills in a professional live theatre performance. Grin and Tonic inspired the students with new ideas to use in their own future work.

This week our Year 12s were treated to a tasty breakfast during PC time to bring them together to connect and enjoy each other's company.

It was a lovely morning with many full tummies!

Congratulations to our Year 12 Hospitality students for creating and presenting an amazing ‘Welcome to Middle School’ lunch for our Year 7 students (and staff). The quality and range of food were exceptional and delicious, and was prepared to a very high standard. Thanks to Mrs Armstrong, Mrs Macdonald, Mrs Nel, and Mrs Sadler for their amazing support and mentoring of our students.

Our Year 11 students had their first visit to Pimpama Tri-Care last week as part of their Service-Learning Religion and Ethics class. The students had a tour of the building and started to connect with the residents. It will be wonderful to see these relationships grow over the coming weeks with further visits. The partnership with Tri-Care is a reciprocal one where our young people get to grow in their understanding of issues surrounding loneliness and isolation as well as developing an understanding of the service-learning concepts of innate dignity, boundary crossing, presence, coming as guest, and story.

Junior Council is a civic leadership program aimed at Year 10 and 11 students from Gold Coast high schools.
The program provides students with the opportunity to take part in their local community by:

• developing an understanding of local government
• discussing and raising awareness of current, local community issues
• developing skills including communication, public speaking, consultation, leadership, and
  
• providing a platform to meet new people, have a voice, and exchange ideas through workshops and volunteer opportunities.

Prep & Year 11 Buddies started last week with the Year 11’s visiting the Prep rooms for a Getting To Know you session. The students drew portraits of each other and a wonderful time was had by all.

The Buddy Program will run all year with the Year 11 Jerseys being presented by their Prep Buddies at the end of the year.

SAVE THE DATE JUNIOR SCHOOL! The 80s are coming to the COLA! On Friday 26th April we will be getting our groove on from Prep to Year 6 at the very funky and fun JUNIOR SCHOOL DISCO. Lock this date in your diary. There will be Food Trucks: Black Sheep Brew & Chew Miss P Icecream, DJ Soul Fusion, Dance Performances, Prizes, and the very energetic Karizmatik Entertainment keeping everyone on the dancefloor for this very special event.
Prep - Year 2 will hit the floor from 4pm to 6pm, then Year 3 to Year 6 will dance into the night from 6pm to 8pm. There is a $3 cover charge per child (like all good discos in the 80s would charge!)

Curtis L competed in the National Tournament of Karate (TSKF) recently. He came 1st in both Kata and Kumite and won the gold medals and the title of National Champion. Congratulations Curtis! Well done!

Our Year 3 to 6 Junior School Cross Country and Colour Fun Run was a big success last week. In the morning, students ran 1, 2, and 3km trying to earn a place to represent LORDS at Inter-Lutheran and Zone carnivals in Term 2. Beyond that, the participation levels were fantastic from all students. Congratulations to Albert House who won the Spirit Trophy and Pimpama House who was our overall House Champion. Also a big congratulations to our Age Champions on the day. After lunch, we transformed our cross country course into a spray of colour. Students had a blast. Check out those smiles!

Last Sunday our 30km Kokoda students took to Nerang State Forest for Kokoda training. 38 students hiked 13km in 3 hours. We will have 11 x 30km Kokoda teams this year - 6 participants in the Brisbane event and 5 participants in the Gold Coast event.
In other exciting Kokoda news, Jasper B, Isaac H, Sonny M, Jakob V, and their leader Mrs Leeds will attempt “The Pinnacle” this year. The Pinnacle is attempting to complete the following:

➡️ 30km Sunshine Coast event
➡️ 48km Brisbane event
➡️ 96km Gold Coast event

This is a LORDS first. It will be no easy feat, but they are training and working hard to try and achieve their goal. Go get it team. The LORDS community is behind you!

South Coast Swimming
Congratulations to Hanna R. for her impressive performance at the South Coast Swimming Trials on Tuesday. She was successful in her selection for the 100m and 200m Breaststroke events to head to the upcoming State Championships. The LORDS community wishes Hanna the best of luck! 

Touch Football Rivers Gala Day
Recently our Year 8, Year 10 and Year 12 boys participated in the Pacific District Gala Day event. LORDS had a very successful day in the hot sun with the Year 8 boys team making the semi-finals and placing 4th overall. Congratulations to all the boys involved!

Basketball Rivers Gala Day
What a spectacular performance our Year 7 and Year 8/9 Basketball teams put into our recent Pacific District Basketball Gala Day event. A big thank you goes to coach James for his guidance and support throughout the day. Both of our teams made the semi-finals, with the Year 8/9 making the Gold Medal match but narrowly missing out by only two points. Well done boys, LORDS is very proud of your efforts.

The 2024 Netball season kicked off over the weekend with 5 teams proudly representing LORDS. This season sees us playing as part of the newly formed Pimpama United Netball Association inc. at the excellent facilities at Pimpama Sports Hub. This is an exciting step in the history of netball at LORDS which sees us as a founding club for this new association. We also have some exciting new branding for our teams!

Each year the season begins with grading to ensure that teams are positioned in the correct category for them. The process began on Saturday and will continue for another round.

St. Vincent de Paul Conference, Upper Coomera believe as a society we could be servicing the areas of Pimpama, Coomera, and the southern parts of Ormeau, more efficiently than at present by setting up another conference in the area.

Our goals are to assist those people who are struggling with cost of living increases with food hampers, Ampol fuel, and Coles food cards plus St Vinnies cards for use in our shops.

We are appealing for new members to open another conference in the Pimpama, Coomera, and lower Ormeau districts, to aid those singles and families who desperately require assistance.
