Leave Requests

Families are reminded that requests for leave need to be in writing to both your class teacher and Mrs Hardke (P-6) and Ms Robbins (Year 7-12) . We strongly encourage you to talk through your request for leave with the school before you go ahead and book or plan any activities.

There are certain times of the term that are not ideal for leave in regards to the learning and teaching process. We understand that certain family circumstances may require leave (eg compassionate leave) and are understanding of these requests and will support families in these situations. 

Term Dates

Parents are reminded that the last day of the school term is Friday 17th June. This is a compulsory day for students as learning and end of term celebrations and activities still occur.

Term Three starts for all students on Monday 11th July.

This week, our Year 12 students celebrated 100 school days until graduation. They celebrated with a special lunch, including Subway and delicious cake, and most importantly, time together. What a milestone!

Have you heard of Nagano? The 7B students have! Recently the Japanese class had a zoom session with Narakawa Elementary and Junior High School in Nagano, Japan, and had the opportunity to introduce themselves in Japanese to the students there. The Narakawa Junior High School students also introduced themselves to us in English, and responded to questions we had asked them about their school. The LORDS students were surprised to learn that the school has a chef who makes school lunch, they have to clean the school and classrooms themselves, and students have to do club activities, such as basketball and brass band. We can’t wait for our next zoom session!

Our scholarship and bursary program rewards students who are high-level academic achievers and will be entering Years 7 to 12 the following calendar year. Both future and current students are welcome to apply.

There was a hive of activity in the Technology department on last week! 

Our Year 5 students were busily building their teddy bear creatures using the information provided by their Kindy buddies. And our Year 11/12 Industrial Technology students were putting the finishing touches on their cabinets. It is so great to see our students so engaged in the learning process.

We are so proud of these 5 amazing readers!! They came 3rd on Tuesday night at the Readers Cup Competition!! There were 15 high schools competing and they were consistent in 2nd or 3rd place right up until the end with there being 1 point between LORDS and 2nd place. Our readers had fun and were delighted with the result they were able to achieve. Congratulations team!

This semester our Prep students have been learning about the importance of bees to our local environment. Last week they were lucky enough to have Ian from 'A Green Soul' come along to run a workshop where the students saw a native beehive being split and got to learn more about our native stingless bees. As part of this project the Prep students have been planning and designing a garden that might attract more native bees to our local environment. We can't wait to see the finished product at our Showcase of Learning.

This term our Year 1 students have begun developing a number of designer mindsets! The students brainstormed ideas for what they could create to make a new space feel more like home for their Living Historians. They then mashed two ideas together to come up with an even better solution.  After listening to feedforward from their Living Historians,  students refined and edited their design ideas to make them even better. They are now in the process of prototyping and creating their final products! The students have been encouraged to learn from failure, collaborate and develop their creative confidence. It’s great to see students learning how to learn, and developing skills that can be applied across many areas of their lives! We can't wait to see the end product at our Showcase of Learning! 

Over the past semester, our Year 3 students have done a deep dive to better understand the needs of people experiencing homelessness. They will demonstrate their understanding of this topic by planning and making a Stop Motion animation that might help raise awareness and understanding of this issue. They have developed a range of technical skills and worked collaboratively to achieve a common goal. We can't wait to see the finished product at the Showcase of Learning!

Student voice plays an important part in community. Ms Hoff was so happy to have Student Council representatives from the Junior School share their pitch with her about improving the eating area in A block. Their ideas included how might we encourage people to eat healthier food and how can we make the area more environmentally friendly.

We are once again staging this wonderful event in the Junior School.

The Arts are well and truly alive at LORDS! Our Winter Soirée held on Monday night highlighted our talented music, drama, visual arts, and fashion students. Special thanks to all our staff who organised this event and to members of the community who supported our young artists. 

Last week selected students from Year 7-11 Netball attended the Rivers Gala Day. Both teams did amazingly well with our senior team finishing 2nd in their pool and 4th overall. The junior girls showed a promising future with the younger students performing well in the Year 9 competition. Congratulations to our Players of the Day: Jasmine M (senior team) and Mia V (junior team). A special mention to Hayley W who filled in for the senior team against Year 11/12 students and was amazing. Great work girls, you should all be extremely proud.

Thanks to our School Captains for leading our Reconciliation Assemblies across the school last week. Our Year 4 students also sang the national anthem in the Yugambeh language as part of their Project Based Learning unit with the question, ‘How might we acknowledge indigenous culture at LORDS?’

How does it feel when someone looks down their nose at you?  Is it because of what you are wearing?  Is it because of the way you speak?  Is it because of your class?  We’ve all had these feelings at various times in our lives and they are uncomfortable.  What if this treatment is based on the colour of one’s skin?

A ‘truth-telling,’ AH-HA moment occurred for me when I was a student at Theological College (Seminary) doing Field Work in a local congregation in the early 90’s.  For the last 2 years of my course, I worked with Pastor Robert Winderlich (now deceased) and the Ferryden Park congregation in Adelaide’s North-West.  This was a combined (by design) white and black congregation.  I drove one of the mini-buses to pick up Aboriginal folk for worship at 11am.  Communion was always a powerful experience as we gathered around the altar, black and white faces together at the Table.  Our eldest, Billy-Jack was 1 at the time.

During those years I became friends with a fine, talented Aboriginal man, Kieron (my age at the time), and one day we were discussing prejudice and racism.  He said to me,  

‘Well, it’s like this Geoff.  When you walk into a shop are you greeted with a smile and a polite welcome?’  ‘Generally, yes,’ I replied.  ‘Well, it’s not like that for our people.’

It’s always best to bring racism and reconciliation issues down to the human level.  They have the biggest impact this way.  

Theologically?  Well, the Nicene Creed says:  ‘He came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human.’  

A shared humanity is always the starting point in matters of reconciliation.
