Shrove Tuesday & Ash Wednesday

This week, we entered a sacred time in the Christian calendar—Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent. These days invite us to reflect, repent, and prepare our hearts for the journey to Easter.

Shrove Tuesday is traditionally a day of feasting and preparation. The word “shrove” comes from “shrive,” meaning to confess and receive forgiveness. Many enjoy pancakes on this day, symbolising the use of rich ingredients before the fasting season of Lent. But more than that, it is a time to pause and ask: What in my life do I need to let go of to grow closer to God?

Ash Wednesday follows, a day of humility and renewal. The sign of the cross in ashes reminds us of our humanity and need for God’s grace:

“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” (Genesis 3:19)

Lent is not just about giving up something; it is about making space for God. Whether through prayer, acts of kindness, or deepening our faith, this season calls us to walk with Jesus with open hearts and renewed purpose.

As we begin this Lenten journey, may we take time to reflect, seek forgiveness, and embrace the hope that Easter brings.

Prayer:

Gracious God, as we enter this season of Lent, help us to draw closer to You. May we seek You in our daily lives, love others as You have loved us, and prepare our hearts for the joy of Easter. Amen.

Partnership between school and home

Thank you to the parents who were able to come along to our Junior School and Secondary School Parent Connection evenings and the Year 12 ‘Together in their corner’ Trivia night.  These are great ways for parents to learn more about the school, the strategic focus and our education programs.  It was a great opportunity for parents and teachers to meet face-to-face.

Your child’s classroom teacher (P-6) or Pastoral Teacher (7-12) is your first point of contact with the school.  Email is often the best way to get in touch with teachers as it can be difficult for them to answer phone calls during the day.  If you would like to make an appointment to meet with the teacher or speak on the phone then please email the teacher to arrange a time.

FOLS (Friends of LORDS)

We thank FOLS for their support with the welcome sausage sizzle and Parent Connection evening suppers.  It was great to hear from Dan Salter, FOLS President, about how parents can get involved in FOLS.  Lots of new parents joined us either in person or online for our first meeting.  The next meeting is on Tuesday, 10th March at 7pm.

Social Media age restrictions

In December last year, the Australian government introduced rules restricting social media use for anyone under 16. These changes aim to reduce online risks and give young people more time to build the skills to navigate social media safely.

Our LORDS community gathered at Highway Church for our Opening Worship Service — a special time to begin the year grounded in faith, gratitude, and purpose.

The service was conducted by Pastor Mark Gierus, who encouraged us to start the year with hearts focused on Christ and a commitment to serving others with courage and compassion.

We were proud to celebrate and acknowledge some significant milestones:

We officially installed our new staff across both Secondary and Junior School, welcoming them into the LORDS family.

Our Junior School Leaders and Secondary School Leaders were presented with their badges, marking the responsibility and privilege of servant leadership in 2026.

We recognised the Class of 2026 as they begin their final year — a moment of excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead.

Academic Awards were presented to our 2025 Year 12 students who returned for the service, celebrating their exceptional results and commitment to learning.

It was a wonderful way to begin the year together — united in faith and inspired for all that 2026 will bring.

We celebrated Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) in the sweetest way possible!

Students brought along their gold coin donations and, in exchange, enjoyed a delicious pancake topped with maple syrup or chocolate. Simple, sweet, and all for a wonderful cause!

All money raised for ALWS through our pancake fundraiser is going to help the people of Ethiopia.

Did you know Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee?
It is also home to more Lutheran people than any other country in the world, with over 11 million Lutherans!

As we reach the midpoint of the term, the end of Week 4 is a valuable opportunity to pause, reflect, and acknowledge the steady effort our students have been putting into their learning. With assessments beginning to appear across subjects, this part of the term often requires focus, resilience and a willingness to lean into challenges.

Being Brave

At the moment, we are focusing on the LORDS Way of being brave. We are encouraging students to be brave—to take thoughtful risks, ask questions, try new strategies, and step outside their comfort zones academically and socially. Bravery in learning isn’t about perfection; it’s about showing up, giving your best, and embracing challenges as opportunities to grow. Whether it’s speaking up in class, seeking help when needed, or attempting a difficult task, these small acts of courage shape confident, resilient learners. 2026 QUT Introduction to Engineering (Year 9 and 10)

Our Year 7 students stepped into the kitchen for the very first time as part of their Food Technology studies — making Smashed Avocado and Feta. The students were very proud of what they produced.

Throughout the year, students will rotate through eight different subjects, experiencing two each term. This gives them a valuable opportunity to discover their strengths, explore their interests, and gain insight into the areas they may wish to pursue in future years.

We can’t wait to see their confidence and creativity grow as the rotations continue!

Year 11 Modern History students visited the Queensland Holocaust Museum as part of their study of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. Students explored the historical timeline from post-World War I Germany through to the persecution of Jewish people, engaging with powerful artefacts belonging to Holocaust survivors who resettled in Brisbane.

A particularly moving component of the visit was hearing directly from Eddie, a descendant of a Holocaust survivor, who shared his father’s personal journey, including his separation from family and experiences in a labour camp. Students also reflected on the Ten Stages of Genocide, deepening their historical understanding and supporting preparation for their upcoming exam essay later this term.

The visit provided an important and authentic opportunity for thoughtful reflection on one of history’s most confronting events, and we are grateful to Qld Holocaust Museum for sharing their stories with us.

We have enjoyed a wonderful and affirming start to the term in the Junior School.

Our Opening Worship was a special time together as a community. We formally welcomed and installed our new teachers, praying over them as they begin their journey with us and committing to support them in the important work they do each day. We also installed our Year 6 Leadership Team for 2026. It was a proud moment to see these students step forward to lead with courage, integrity, and a heart for service. We look forward to the positive impact they will have across our school this year.

Our Year 3 and Year 5 students completed their NAPLAN practice sessions this week, and I am pleased to share that everything ran very smoothly. The purpose of these practice tests is simply to familiarise students with the online platform and reduce any uncertainty ahead of the formal assessment period. The students approached the experience calmly and maturely.

We were delighted to host a group of Japanese university students who spent time engaging with several of our Junior School classes. Students enjoyed participating in fun cultural activities and interactive learning experiences. It was a wonderful opportunity to build global awareness and celebrate learning beyond the classroom. Thank you to our staff and students for making our visitors feel so welcome.

Our Year 1 students had a fantastic day at Beenleigh Historical Village. The excursion brought their learning to life as they explored buildings and artefacts from the past, gaining a deeper understanding of how life has changed over time. The students represented our school beautifully and returned full of stories and new knowledge.

Our Prep students have settled beautifully into school life and are already showing growing confidence and independence in their daily routines.

It has been wonderful to see them forming new friendships, learning classroom expectations, and embracing each day with enthusiasm. They are engaging in their learning through hands-on activities and play-based exploration, building strong foundations in literacy and numeracy while having so much fun along the way.

As they learn, they are also beginning to embrace the LORD’s Ways of thinking, growing as curious, critical, and creative learners. We are so proud of how well they are adapting and thriving in their new school environment.

Our Junior School students had the pleasure of welcoming a wonderful group of visitors from Nagoya University in Japan last week!

Our new friends couldn’t wait to share some traditional and modern Japanese games with our students. There was an anime character card-matching challenge, a chopstick skill competition, a classic Japanese board game, traditional Japanese string play, a Japanese-style twist on “pin the tail on the donkey,” and a crowd-favourite paper airplane challenge. The laughter and excitement said it all!

During their visit, the university students enjoyed touring both our Junior and Senior campuses. They were especially interested in seeing how LORDS nurtures student wellbeing and a genuine love of learning. Highlights included bouncing on the Senior School trampolines, learning about our diverse options for lunchtime play, and discovering the creativity sparked in the Technology and Design spaces.

It was a joyful cultural exchange filled with fun, friendship, and learning. とても楽しかったです！ (It was so much fun!)

Our students have been actively engaging in hands-on STEM learning across the year levels, exploring science, technology, engineering, and digital skills in creative and practical ways. From simple machines and plant experiments to robotics, animation, and real-world technology applications, each year level is building curiosity, confidence, and problem-solving skills through meaningful, real-world experiences.

Year 7 students are exploring the six simple machines – lever, wheel and axle, pulley, inclined plane, wedge, and screw – and discovering how they make our world more efficient. They are applying this knowledge through hands-on robotics and coding challenges, designing and testing projects that demonstrate each machine in action. Students were privileged to connect their learning with the real world by visiting our on-site construction team at LORDS to see these machines in practical use
A big thank you to our School Business  Manager, Mr Stuart Halsall, for supporting this innovative, hands-on learning experience.

Year 6 students are diving into the world of plant growth by designing and conducting their own experiments. They are discovering how to identify dependent, independent, and controlled variables while exploring what makes plants thrive. Through hands-on investigations, students are testing different factors, making careful observations, and recording their results.

Year 5 students are designing and creating ‘Plushie’ toys to welcome our new Prep students. They are developing skills in sewing and safely using a hot glue gun. The completed toys will be donated to the Prep classroom facilities.

Year 4 students are learning to use laptops confidently and safely, including secure log-on practices. They are exploring Microsoft apps to create, organise, and share digital content, building their digital skills, problem-solving abilities, and confidence in technology.

Year 3 students are investigating the world of animation. Using storyboards and a stop motion app, they are designing and creating their own short movies.

Year 2 students are to be congratulated for embracing the real-world environment of STEM learning. They are beginning their journey by exploring digital technology and its impact on everyday life, discovering the devices and tools they use while developing an understanding of online safety. Their learning will be further extended through an upcoming excursion to a local supermarket, connecting technology to real-world experience.

Our Year 1 students were visited by our wonderful Living Historians, Joy, Ross, and Trevor.

They shared special memories from their childhood, answered lots of thoughtful questions, and brought along photos to help bring the past to life. A fantastic hands-on experience as part of our Project-Based Learning unit this semester.

On Thursday, 19th February, LORDS entered two teams in the Rivers Gala Day Touch Football tournament held at Bill Norris Oval. This was the first of seven Rivers Gala Days scheduled for the year.

Facing strong opposition, including several schools with specialist touch football programs, both LORDS teams displayed excellent effort and played some quality football throughout the day.

A special thank you to Mrs Bloch for her coaching expertise, particularly in encouraging aggressive rucking in the first three touches, which helped set a strong platform for our attacking play.

It will be exciting to see how these players and teams will continue to grow and develop throughout the AGCC season, with training each Tuesday morning and the potential entry into the Logan All Schools Cup in May.

Standout performances in the Year 8 team came from Daly K, Mason P, and Quinn C, while Mitch F, Nate G, and Jon T were highlights for the Year 10 team.

Congratulations to Liam C who was selected for the 13-15 years Pacific Districts Soccer Team.

Liam will compete at the Regionals on 26th February.
We wish him all the best for this tournament.

Congratulations to Year 7 student, Mason O, who was selected as the Logan Region U13 Goalkeeper for Northern Regional Titles to be played over the Easter School Holidays.

He is currently training/playing (across school and club) 6 days a week!

Congratulations to Athena WI, who recently competed at the QLD Aquathlon Championships in Hervey Bay in a field of 123 athletes, gaining valuable experience.

Athena then placed 2nd in both the 800m and 1500m at the Little Athletics South East Regional Championships, qualifying for the State Championships in March. If that’s not enough, Athena will also represent the Gold Coast Sharks at the Northern Regionals Futsal Championships in April.

The Australian Lutheran World Service is hosting an International Women’s Day event on Friday, 13th March, 2026.

A networking event by Lutheran Education Australia (LEA) and ALWS.

Tickets are $45 and include drinks and nibbles!

Hear stories of inspiration from our Lutheran network, both in Australia and around the world, with a special focus on the importance of education for girls…especially Girls in Danger.

Through real stories, we explore leadership, faith, and the difference women are making in their communities, both locally and around the world.

The special guest speaker is Mary Obara, the Program Manager for the Lutheran World Federation Kenya-Somalia.

Before and After School Care is available on site at LORDS Monday to Friday excluding Public Holidays.

Second Hand LORDS Uniforms

Sustainable School Shop enables parents to buy and sell second-hand LORDS uniform items online.

School Office

Our office hours are between 8.00am – 4.00pm, Monday to Friday with the exception of Public Holidays.

School Policies

You can access our Child Protection Policy and Grievance Policy on our website or a hard copy at Reception in the Administration Building.

Tuckshop

Our Tuckshop on Wheels operates for morning tea and lunch on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Orders are to be placed online via Flexischools prior to 8.15 am each day. Students from Years 7 - 12 and staff may purchase over the counter with cash or eftpos at break times. We do not allow Junior School students to purchase items over the counter. All Junior School orders must be placed using Flexischools.

Reminder: No Nuts or Nut Products at School

A reminder to all families that our school is a nut-free environment to protect students with severe anaphylactic allergies. We ask that no nuts or nut-based products (including items like Nutella or peanut butter) be brought to school in lunchboxes, snacks, or for sharing during special events.

This applies to all year levels from Kindergarten to Year 12, and includes all school events, excursions, and activities.

Please note that while we aim to be nut-free, some pre-packaged items may contain traces of nuts as stated by manufacturers. We encourage parents to check labels carefully and choose safe alternatives.
