Stories play an important part in our lives. They give us a touchstone for where our humanity can connect. Stories allow us to understand ourselves and others.

Even more powerful for us is that we have God’s Story at the centre of our community. Ultimately we know that God’s story is one of love. Love for the world. Love for His people.

God’s story, LORDS Story, and the Story of each member of our community are connected and woven together. Our school bible verse is from Romans 14:8 ‘ We are the Lord’s’. It firmly reminds us of not only who we are, but whose we are…the Lord’s. That is the basis of our story. Because we are the Lord’s we are known and accepted in all of our goodness and imperfections. What a gift to know we are accepted just as we are.

• This year we will be praying for families in our community and their needs: Chan Lai Sin, Chang, Chapellin Lee, Chapman, Charity, Cheesman
• For the students and staff completing exams and assessments
• For open hearts and minds to serve people in our homes, school, and wider community
• Give thanks for people who make time for others
• For Mrs Haywood and her family as they prepare to leave Australia and move overseas

Farewell

We wish Mrs Leah Haywood every blessing as she leaves the LORDS Community to go and live in Abu Dhabi to work at an international school. Leah had worked at LORDS for eleven years as a classroom teacher and member of the leadership team in the area of learning and teaching. Her contribution to the learning culture of LORDS is greatly appreciated as she worked with staff across P-9 in developing our approach to project-based learning and the development of The LORDS Ways across the school. Leah also worked with teachers on developing the Year 8/9 Passion and Purpose Pathways. 

Go well, Leah, you will be missed.

Our academic scholarship program rewards students who are high-level academic achievers and will be entering Years 7 to 12 the following calendar year.

Criteria: LORDS awards academic scholarships based on the results of our scholarship examinations which are held twice a year in March and again in September. Students only need to sit one exam per year. Exam results, in consultation with a Principal’s interview, previous school reports, and NAPLAN results, may result in a scholarship being offered for the following academic year.

On Wednesday the Year 9 students experienced sustainable and local farming practices in real life. They travelled to the very chilly Beechmont plateau and visited a beef farm, a lime farm, and a dairy farm and learned how many farmers are having to adapt and pivot in this difficult produce climate. Along the way, we fed some cows and goats, picked and squeezed limes, and met a 2 day old goat. A rich learning experience.

Students recently took part in The Southport School's Model United Nations Conference for 2024 (TSSMUN2024). TSSMUN is a student-led conference where students act as delegates for a country to negotiate human rights, peace and security, and rule of law issues that often cross the United Nations agenda. It was great to see LORDS students from Years 9-12 be an advocate for their country and network with other schools on the Gold Coast!

Last week we celebrated the achievements of students in Semester 1. Academic Awards, Excellence of Effort, and Improvement Awards were presented to students. We also acknowledged many students who had received an A+ or 100% during the Semester with a rousing three cheers from Ms Hoff. Students who exhibited Exemplary Habits and Gold Star attendance were also acknowledged. It was a wonderful opportunity for celebration and it was wonderful to share with so many parents and loved ones.

We are thrilled to announce LORDS students Lachlan M and Alex dH have been selected to compete in a Regional WorldSkills competition due to their dedication to the TAFE Trade program. This is a significant achievement and a testament to their skills and dedication.
Competing in WorldSkills competitions not only highlights excellence in vocational training but also opens up numerous opportunities for professional growth and recognition. Participation in WorldSkills can lead to:

Gold Coast’s future leaders have celebrated 8 years to go until the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games at a special event at CBUS Stadium on Tuesday 23rd July. Our Gold Coast Junior Council Members, Mia V (Yr 11), Georgia D (Yr 10), and Tristan M (Yr 10) attended this special event, joining 170 students representing 37 schools at CBUS Stadium, a future Olympic football venue for a day of workshops, inspiration and a bit of good old fashioned Aussie pride.

The Gold Coast Junior Council is a two-year student leadership and civic program that provides opportunities for students to develop communication, public speaking, and leadership skills while being involved in the local community.

The students heard from City of Gold Coast Acting Mayor Donna Gates and Olympic Gold Medallists Brooke Hanson and Sara Carrigan across the day and visited the Bond Institute of Health and Sport.

Welcome to our visiting friends from Kokushikan High School! 
They only arrived on Monday 22nd July, and so far our Japanese friends have made quite an impression – joining in lunchtime games in the COLA and on the Oval, enjoying the swings and trampolines in the Senior School playground, and practicing their English with students around the picnic tables. They have also managed to squeeze in visits to LORDS classes, where they participated in Science experiments with Year 11 Chemistry, learned about Aussie landmarks with Year 4, competed in the Year 8 English Grammar Olympics, used metaphors to describe different lollies with Year 9 English, and shared their knowledge of Japanese food and chopstick expertise with the Year 7s.
🌸A huge thank you to our generous Host Families for making this experience possible and for giving both the LORDS and Kokushikan students such a great opportunity to learn about another culture, language, and lifestyle. 

Our Japanese visitors from Kokushikan High School have ticked off a bunch of ‘Aussie experiences’:

• Tasting a range of delicious fruits at Tropical Fruit World
• Learning how to make ANZAC biscuits, Vegemite and Cheese scrolls, and Lamingtons with our Year 10 Hospitality class
• Painting and gluing their own special kangaroo ornament in our Design Technology space

Watching the LORDS students in action has been wonderful, being Curious, Brave, and Collaborative with our special guests. With more classroom visits this week, ask your child if they have had a chance to say ‘konnichiwa’ to our new friends!

Readers Cup Year 9 & 10 for 2024.
Over the last 8 weeks our Readers Cup Teams have read 4 novels and learned as much as they can about the storylines, characters, topics, and details involved in each book. Yesterday, our 2 teams travelled to Hillcrest Christian College and competed against 16 teams on the Gold Coast and did extremely well!
A great time and a wonderful celebration of literacy and reading! We are very proud of them all!

Hip hip hooray! Last week our Prep students celebrated 100 days of learning and growing together! It was terrific to have their Year 11 buddies join them for this wonderful celebration.

Book Week rolled into LORDS with the theme of “Catch the Reading Wave.” 🏄‍♂️📚
Students were slightly shell-shocked to ‘sea’ a giant octopus lolling around outside the admin building. Eight legs akimbo; flippers floundering on the ends!
The Learning Hub was bubbling with both books and a brood of boys and girls.
Wish lists completed; hopefully, students will be satisfied with their shopping lists

All students from Prep to Year 12 spent PC time with buddy classes reading! Lots of smiles and books being shared.

On 23rd July, LORDS participated in the Readers Cup Challenge for the Year 5/6 group.
Readers Cup is where a group of students read 5 books over a 6 week period and then have to answer 25 questions from the books all from memory. The students have been practising answering questions at lunch time over the past few weeks as well as reading the books at home.
The competition was very challenging but our Year 6 students did a fantastic job and left the night with big smiles on their faces.

Well done to those students who have been successful in obtaining the positions of class leaders for this term. These students have demonstrated outstanding team leadership, dedication, and enthusiasm in STEM classes.

I am excited to announce that LORDS Junior School is participating in Jump Rope for Heart this term – a fantastic fundraising and physical activity program by the Heart Foundation.

By participating in Jump Rope for Heart this term, we’re expecting to get our students moving. We’ll have skipping ropes available on the school grounds and encourage everyone to help raise funds for lifesaving research and support programs.

Over the coming weeks, your child will learn new skills, increase physical activity, and learn about heart health. The program will end with our school-wide ‘Jump Off Day’ where your child gets to show off their new skipping skills to their friends.

Our Secondary School athletes competed in Day 1 of the 2024 Pacific Districts Athletics competition on Wednesday. The team did LORDS proud with some impressive performances from many athletes. Special mention to Harper B and Mirabella B in the 3000m and Harper in the 800m also – achieving podium finishes. Nathan C bagged a bronze in the shot put and Hannah Evans, Estayah S, and Max C all made the finals of the 200m. Equal to that, without even being asked to do so, it was great to see our LORDS athletes offering to help at the different events including raking the pit at the long jump and collecting the discus.

Congratulations to Aidan S who has been selected for the Futsal Pacific Team (14 years) and will compete in the South Coast trials in August. Well done Aidan!

Congratulations to Athena WI who competed at the Queensland Athletics State Cross Country Championships last weekend. She ran a massive PB of 11 mins and 34 secs over the 3km course and secured a spot on the Queensland team to compete at the Australian Cross Country Championships in Tasmania next month. Great work, Athena!

Another great Saturday of Netball. Thanks so much to our amazing volunteers who worked on the BBQ and baked for our stall. Congratulations to all teams who played with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship.
Last week was also exciting for our Monday night Netball teams starting the second season for the year. We look forward to the exciting season ahead.

We are very excited to announce that our new House Indigenous Shirts are now available for our families to purchase. The information on how to buy has been emailed last week. The link is also on our App.

Shirts can be worn for all House events (swimming carnivals, cross country, athletics carnivals, and other inter-house competitions throughout the year). They can also be worn during Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week.

Welcome to LHP (Lutheran Holiday Program) for 2024! LHP is a mission of the Alberton Lutheran Parish.

We would LOVE for your children, along with their friends, neighbours, and family to join us for these 3 days of jam-packed fun!
We begin each day in the LORDS library for our opening of fun music, drama watching, theme, and mission. Then we set off in groups to explore cooking, crafts, bible stories, sports, science experiments, sticky scripture, and more! Each day involves a fun Minute to Win It session and we have many surprises in store!

There is a set group for our young friends – children from the age of 3 are welcome, but must have a parent stay if they are not toilet trained yet.
