Leave Requests
Families are reminded that requests for leave need to be in writing to Mrs Hardke for students in Years Prep to 6 and Mrs Kinne for Years 7 to 12. We strongly encourage you to talk through your request for leave with the school before you go ahead and book or plan any activities.

There are certain times of the term that are not ideal for leave regarding the learning and teaching process and assessment. We understand that certain family circumstances may require leave (eg compassionate leave) and are understanding of these requests and will support families in these situations.

And that's a wrap! Our big bus got itself a fabulous makeover recently. Gold Coast Wraps has done a great job again. You won't be able to miss this bus on the road! We now have a great looking fleet of buses driving around our students.

Our new Performing Arts space has been embraced by our students and staff. It's a great area for all aspects of the Arts at LORDS - music, drama, dance. A multi-function space with digital stations for our budding musicians, performers, and writers.

It was a privilege to welcome Principal Hotlin Sitdrus from Indonesia recently at LORDS. Hotlin leads a Christian school called Yayasan Pendidikan Kristen Manna. It was wonderful to take her on a tour around the school and for her to see learning in action at LORDS. We wish her school and community every blessing for the future.

On Monday, our Year 9 students had an incredible hands-on experience with a WWI Living History incursion! They had the unique opportunity to touch artifacts that are over 100 years old and delve into the fascinating stories behind them.
It was a truly immersive experience that brought history to life right before their eyes!

What are the Passion and Purpose Pathways?

As the name suggests this Year 8/9 program aims to engage our young people by tapping into their innate sense of curiosity through experiential learning experiences. Through these pathway subjects we aim to achieve the following:

• develop specific knowledge and 21st C skills (The LORDS Ways)
• provide opportunities to connect with industry and organisations outside of the school community
• provide authentic, real-world experiences for our young people
• empower our young people to make positive change in the world
• allow opportunities for students to make connections across subject areas

Why have we taken this approach?

Current research suggests that adolescence learn best when they:

• understand the relevance/ purpose of the learning experience
• have opportunities to make contributions
• are engaged in challenges, simulations, experiences and role plays
• are given independence and self-efficacy
• can creatively explore and problem solve

  Below are some of the recent experiences that the students have engaged with as part of the pathway subjects:
• partaking in water safety courses run by Surf Life-Saving Australia
• learning how to use the 3D modelling program ‘Fusion 360’ to draw tiny home designs.
• developing photography skills using a DSLR camera.
• identifying different hair fibres by exploring their properties.
• Developing life skills such as how to sew on a button!

Year 10 Business Studies had a guest speaker last week, Paula Galea (Senior Mobile Banking Specialist), to present valuable information about their topic for this term, Personal Wealth. Paula discussed the basics of savings accounts vs term deposits, debit cards vs credit cards, and fixed vs variable rates. Students were also participating in Q&A.

The presentation was excellent. Not only did it help the students in their assessment task for the term, but also gave them insights into ‘real world’ life skills and knowledge on current and future financial decisions they will encounter. Thanks for visiting us Paula.

Noah S (Year 12) presented to the Year 11 Business class this week, to inspire them for their current Business task. The Year 11 class is currently studying the Seed stage of the business cycle and will have to ‘start’ their own business (idea). Noah, is a successful entrepreneur. He started his watch business, TIMELESS TIMEKEEPERS, two years ago. He buys, second-hand fashionable/old-school classics brands of watches, and resells them online.

Calling Year 9-12 thinkers, dreamers and creatives!!

On Thursday 30th May, we are taking a group of keen students to the 2024 'Future Skills Summit'.

This interactive workshop is for students with a keen interest in STEM, and business, as well as students with a passion for critical and creative thinking to solve economic and environmental problems.

This week, Our "Surviving the Adult Jungle" class has planned, drafted, and then created positive messages around our school using chalk art. This is part of their wellness unit.

Great to see staff and students volunteering their time in the holidays to get our props and sets ready for our amazing musical Alice in Wonderland.

Students in the Secondary School are excited to see their new play and gathering space coming to life outside L Block. Thanks again to FOLS (LORDS P&C) for supporting this terrific project.

The 80s are coming to the COLA! On Friday 26th April we will be getting our groove on from Prep to Year 6 at the very funky and fun JUNIOR SCHOOL DISCO. Lock this date in your diary. There will be Food Trucks: Black Sheep Brew & Chew Miss P Icecream, DJ Soul Fusion, Dance Performances, Prizes, and the very energetic Karizmatik Entertainment keeping everyone on the dancefloor for this very special event.
Prep - Year 2 will hit the floor from 4pm to 6pm, then Year 3 to Year 6 will dance into the night from 6pm to 8pm. There is a $3 cover charge per child (like all good discos in the 80s would charge!)

It's been a busy back-to-school time for our students in STEM classes.

• Year 2 students began to explore the technical world of ‘Coding’. They developed and created a robotic sequence of coding procedures.
• Year 4 was introduced to the topic of recycling using plastics. Students researched and investigated the impact that plastics play in our environment and began to devise plans on how they could be repurposed.
• Year 5 students embarked on a Unit of learning based on solar energy. They undertook experiments to prove that colour and heat play a major role in solar design and technology.
• In STEM club students continued to create and build impressive Lego models using ‘Machines and Mechanisms’. Their constructions facilitated and integrated the use of solar panels, energy meters and e-motors.

Our Prep students embraced ANZAC Day by making their own poppies earlier this week.

Our Spelling Bee is back for all students in Years 3 to 6.

As you can see the Little Wonders children are enjoying their new playground immensely. Not long now and the excitement with Stage 2 will be OPEN TOO!!

A Triumph of Grit and Mateship!

Well done to Sonny, Jasper, Isaac, and Jakob for conquering the grueling 30km Sunshine Coast Kokoda event this past weekend! Their journey was nothing short of awe-inspiring, showcasing their commitment, mateship, determination, and sheer grit.

They navigated a track that boasted a staggering 1700M elevation profile, and battled at times relentless rain for 5 out of the 6 hours, but they kept their spirits high and feet moving, even though 75% of the course turned into a slippery mud fest.

At the end of it all, they finished the 30km at 5 hours and 57 minutes, becoming the first LORDS team to complete a sub 6 hour 30km Kokoda event.

Amongst all the school teams, they came second position overall, a remarkable feat in itself. They also came 1st out of the 14 school teams completing the Pinnacle Challenge. 

Sonny, Jasper, Isaac, and Jakob, your achievement is inspiring. We look forward to seeing how you travel as you tackle the 48km Brisbane event next.

NUMINBAH TRAINING

It was a big weekend for our Kokoda kids this past weekend. Not only did our Pinnacle students tackle the Sunshine Coast event, but our 30km and 48km teams had a big training session in Numinbah Valley. It was a true Kokoda experience with big hills, rain, and creek crossings. What better way to test your grit? We wish all of our Kokoda teams the best as they take on this journey. Not long now until our Brisbane event on June 1st. Go get it LORDS.

ZONE CROSS COUNTRY - 17TH APRIL

It was a day filled with grit, determination, and incredible spirit as our LORDS students took on The Zone Cross Country Event. Our students stood out not just for their athletic prowess, but for their unwavering enthusiasm to push themselves to new heights.

Congratulations to Mia C, Athena WI, Ellie H, and Isla R. These 4 remarkable individuals have earned their spot in the District Event, a testament to their hard work and passion for running. But the achievements don't stop there! Our 11-year-old boys' and girls' relay teams secured an impressive 4th place out of 30 schools. Their teamwork, speed, and perseverance were nothing short of inspiring.

As a school, we couldn't be more proud of all our athletes. They not only represented LORDS with distinction, but also showed the true spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie. It's moments like these that remind us of the incredible talent and dedication within our school community.

Congratulations again to Mia C, Athena WI, Ellie H, Isla R, and all our sensational runners! We can't wait to cheer you on as you continue to strive for excellence. Go LORDS!

LORDS CROSS COUNTRY - 19TH APRIL (YEAR 7-12)

The weather finally held out for our Secondary School students to participate in the annual cross country event last Friday. It was fantastic to see so many students getting involved to earn points for their houses. Special congratulations to all of our age champions!

Our Prep – Year 2 classes this week have been lucky enough to have Liam from AFL Queensland join us and teach some AFL skills and drills.

Starting Friday (26th April), Auskick will run on our oval for Prep – Year 2 students from 3:10 – 4:10pm. Also, the brand new Superkick program will be open to students from Years 3 – 6 at the same time. Information has been sent home to all students from Prep – Year 6. 

This Tuesday 30th April, LORDS will be holding a fundraising Ukrainian Pancake (Syrniki) BBQ to raise money for ALWS Walk My Way Ukraine.

The Prep-Year 6 students will have a choice between trying Syrniki (which is more like a cheesecake texture), or regular pancakes and maple syrup if they prefer. Orders will be taken in classrooms by Chappy Jeremy and Mrs Rebecca Ludcke so please send gold coins with your child if they wish to participate. The pancakes will be served to the students at the end of Period 4, just before lunchtime.

The Year 7-12 students will simply be invited to line up at the BBQ outside the hospitality kitchen at lunch and donate their coins to receive some delicious Syrniki!

Thank you for your support and we would love to see you for some Syrniki next Tuesday!

Every year up to five CLWs take place throughout South-East and Central Queensland during the June-July and September- October School Holidays.  Each camp is run by a team of experienced and passionate leaders with stacks of fun planned for the week. 

Generally, the program will contain worship, small groups, games, various activities, and personal challenges, with individual camps taking on a unique flavour, dependent upon location, camp facilities, leadership team, and size of the camp. 

Check out our Winter Kids Camp Coolum for Year 3-6 which will run 26-30 June alongside first week CLW camps.

Christian Life Week (CLW) is a five-day camp for high school-aged students that is centred on an unforgettable experience of faith, friendship, and fun. CLW is a chance for teenagers to escape the everyday, have a stack of good clean fun, and discover more about what it means to be a Christian.
Registrations open 1 April- 9 June 2024. Camper places may fill earlier.

Thanks to Chappy Jez, Mrs Ludcke, and Miss Krenske for our wonderful Easter Worship services last month. The Secondary School's theme was ‘Upside Down Love’ and the Junior School's theme was ‘You are the light of the world’. Students in the Secondary School were given a cross as a reminder of the hope and love we can experience through our relationship with Jesus. Junior School students were given a candle to symbolise that just like Jesus, we are called to be light in the world 🕯
We hope our community had a happy and blessed Easter as we celebrated the death and resurrection of Our Saviour, Jesus.
